Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3)
Vitamin D Deficiency
Vitamin D is used to treat and prevent bone
disorders (such as rickets, osteomalacia). With calcium, Vitamin
D is used to treat or prevent bone loss (osteoporosis). Vitamin
D is also used with other medications to treat low levels
of calcium or phosphate caused by certain disorders (such
as hypoparathyroidism, pseudohypoparathyroidism, familial
hypophosphatemia). It may be used in kidney disease to keep
calcium levels normal and allow normal bone growth.
Vitamin D: The "sunshine" vitamin. Vitamin D is unique because it can be made in the skin from exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D sufficiency enhances calcium and phosphorus absorption by 30-40% and 80%, respectively. The high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency is a particularly important public health issue because Vitamin D insufficiency affects almost 50% of the population worldwide.
