Vitamin D analogues are used in treatment of refractory rickets (Vitamin D-resistant rickets), familial hypophosphatemia and hypoparathyroidism, and in the management of hypocalcemia and renal osteodystrophy in patients with chronic renal failure undergoing dialysis. Vitamin D is used in conjunction with calcium in the management and prevention of primary or corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis. Vitamin D supplementation is indicated when dietary intake is insufficient, e.g., breast-fed infants.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
Vitamin D: The “sunshine” vitamin. Vitamin D is unique because it can be made in the skin from exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D sufficiency enhances calcium and phosphorus absorption by 30-40% and 80%, respectively. The high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency is a particularly important public health issue because Vitamin D insufficiency affects almost 50% of the population worldwide. This pandemic of hypovitaminosis D can mainly be attributed to lifestyle and environmental factors that reduce exposure to sunlight, which is required for ultraviolet-B (UVB)-induced vitamin D production in the skin.
